Alice Marie Johnson Whitley passed away peacefully at home on December 8, 2016. She was born to Gust Johnson and Anna (née Otto) at the family farm on the East Hill, Kent Washington, November 11, 1919. She attended Tanner School and graduated from Meridian High School, class of 1938. She graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in nursing. She married Pharis Whitley September 5, 1942. They lived in Kittitas, Washington for five years. In 1947 they moved to Enumclaw until 1973 when they moved to their present home on Lake Tapps.
Alice was a longtime member of Auburn Youth Conference Committee, the League of Women Voters, a campfire leader, an avid bridge player and knitter and believed in healthy eating and exercise. She treasured her Scandinavian heritage, studied Swedish with her Swedish language group for many years and was a member of Auburn Sons of Norway. Alice was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Enumclaw, Christ the King Lutheran Church in Sumner and Creator Lutheran at Lake Tapps. She was predeceased by her parents, Anna and Gust, her brother Karl Johnson of Kent, and her husband Pharis, in June, 2003. Alice and Pharis were married for 60 years and after his death she continued to maintain her own home on Lake Tapps with her beloved view of Mount Rainier.
Alice is survived by her five daughters, Carol (Jim) Larson, Lexington, KY, Suzi Hokonson, Spokane, WA, Marion (Pat) McDougal, Oregon City, OR, Janet Whitley, Portland, OR and Chris (Jay) Yourglich, Lake Tapps, WA. She is survived by 11 adoring grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren and six nieces and nephews.
A memorial service and lunch will be held February 4th at 11:30 am, Creator Lutheran Church, 16702 S Tapps Dr. E, Bonney Lake, WA. 98391
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Alice's name to Creator Lutheran Church, and Auburn Youth Conference Committee.
