On March 12, 2017 as tears fell like rain, we lost a most interesting woman, Helen "Marie" Darney-Hubbard. She was the third child born to Frederick C. Bruce and Frances E. (Hossle) Bruce on October 28, 1926 in Lake Stevens, WA. Marie was 90 years old but forever young! She grew up and went to school in Lake Stevens. She met Thomas E. Darney and they were married on February 8, 1946 in Seattle, WA. Both Marie and Thomas worked for Weyerhaeuser and moved to Enumclaw in 1947 where she lived until her death. They had one son, Robert T. Darney.
Many years later while running her bookkeeping/key punch business in Enumclaw, she met George D. Hubbard and they were married on March 26, 1971. He was the owner of Hubbard CPA Accounting. Marie worked with George until they retired. They enjoyed trips to Reno and Lake Tahoe for golf and playing cards, dice, bingo, and slot machines. Marie was always ready for an adventure. She could be found at the Muckleshoot Casino enjoying those same activities. She loved chocolate, dancing, and garage sales. She was often picking up special things for all her friends. She enjoyed gardening and canning green beans and asparagus, again for her friends. Pull tabs were her favorite pastime, she was known around town for being the luckiest player. Marie never came empty handed to any function, she was always first to bring something to eat at gatherings or whenever friends or family were in need.
Marie is survived by her son, Robert Darney and his wife Jan of Enumclaw; stepdaughters, Gail Ford and Nancy Hitchcock of Enumclaw and Janie Stitzieger and her husband Greg of Corona, CA; nieces, Linda Conway and Mary Bruce of Tacoma; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and many many friends. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas Darney and George Hubbard; sister and brother-in-law, Darleen and Leonard Rein; brother, Wayne Bruce; and nephew, William Bruce.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 13th from 2-4pm at the Four Seasons Lounge, 820 Griffin Ave., Enumclaw, WA 98022. Inurnment was at Tahoma National Cemetery.
Remembrances may be made to Franciscan Hospice House, 2901 Bridgeport Way W., University Place, WA 98466.
