Jim Zumwalt Obituary

Jim, 89, passed away peacefully at his home in Enumclaw on October 26, 2019 with family by his side.

He was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico July 13, 1930. During his younger years, his family moved many times as his father was in road construction.  They found Canyonville, OR to be a good home and Jim lived there until he enlisted in the US Navy in 1949.  He was honorably discharged in 1956 with time spent in the reserves.

Jim and his brother, A. G. (Jerry) Zumwalt, formed a partnership, Access Construction, (road building), in 1958.  Later two more corporations, Columbia Contractors and Construction Rentals, Inc., were formed.  They continued to build and/or reconstruct roads in Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Northern California until retirement in 1991.

Jim had a full life. He served as a wonderful advisor on many subjects, was hardworking, and thought quiet he had a great sense of humor.  He devoted himself to taking care of all his family.  His daughter Tami was the light of his life.

He loved to fly in his Cessna 172 8885U and he laughed when he said, “If you have time to spare, go by air”…because sometime the traffic below would be faster due to airflow above.  After retirement, we were able to take many trips in our motorhome through parts of the USA and Canada.  He enjoyed our vacations in Arizona and time family and friends.

Jim was a member of the Masonic Lodge #72 in Roseburg, OR, the Crescent Masonic Lodge #109 in Enumclaw, WA and The Museum of Flight, Seattle, WA.  He attended Calvary Presbyterian Church in Enumclaw with his family.

Jim is survived by his wife, Judy and daughter, Tami, grandson Brad Hembree, granddaughter, Leeann Hembree, two brothers, Jerry (Polly) Zumwalt and Clyde (Lynn) Zumwalt, sister, Laurel Barsalou, and numerous nieces and nephews.  He will be greatly missed by all.

A private family burial will be at Buckley Cemetery.  A Celebration of Life is Saturday, November 9, 2019 at Calvary Presbyterian Church at 1:00 p.m.  Donations maybe made to the Franciscan Foundation, PO Box 1502, Tacoma, WA 98401-1502 (specify Hospice) in lieu of flowers.
