Marion F. Early died Thursday, September 21, 2017 at Washington Soldiers Home at the age of 95. She was born, September 4, 1922 in Chicago, IL., the youngest daughter of William D. Early and Selma Early (Voigt).
Marion became an RN and dedicated her life to caring for soldiers. She maintained licenses in Illinois, Indiana, and Florida, where her parents lived. She joined the Army and was deployed to Japan and Korea during the Korean War and became a MASH nurse. Marion was awarded the Korean Service, United Nations Service, and National Defense Service medals.
On discharge, she worked at the Hines Veteran’s Hospital in Chicago, IL. She learned techniques to care for the spinal cord injured soldiers and was called on to care for Alabama Gov. George Wallace who was paralyzed after an attempted assassination.
After retirement, she traveled the world with her friends and eventually moved to Washington to be near her family. She joined the VFW Post 1949 and became their chaplain for many years. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion and earned many service awards. Marion is survived by 3 nieces and I nephew and is the last of her generation.
