Boyd Stern Obituary

Boyd (Deke) Dickinson Stern, born Fall 1946, son of Augusta  and Albert Stern, passed May 3, 2020. He grew up in Parkland, Washington. He attended Franklin Pierce High School where he was president of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) and graduated in June 1964. He then attended Centralia Community College and earned his AA in June 1966. Boyd then attended Central Washington State College where he won the first Tav River Race. Earned his teaching degree in 1968. Boyd then was hired by Tacoma Public Schools in September 1968 and taught for Tacoma Public Schools for 30 years. Boyd’s first teaching assignment was Stewart Junior High where he taught and coached there for 18 years. During his years at Stewart, Coach Stern and his wrestlers earned many city championships. Coach Stern then moved up to Mt. Tahoma High School, where he coached many wrestlers on to state titles. After retiring from teaching and coaching Boyd then became active in Scouting. He was Cub Master of Pack 577 and mentored many Boy Scouts along the Eagle Trail. Boyd was also active in the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Boyd was a member of Buckley Aerie #1387, where he is a past Trustee. He is also a member of Eatonville Aerie #3158, where he was Worthy President. Boyd also served on the Board of Eagle Valley Campground. Boyd is survived by his wife, Pam, daughters: Beth Cockcroft (Brandon), Meg Chambers (Sanger) and Stephanie; and sons Boyd Stern II, Chuck, Ted and Will: grandchildren: Maddy, Wyatt, Owen, Anders, Emily and Jacinda; brothers John Stern and Mike (Jerry) Stern (Kay) nieces and nephews and Mary Beth (Buffy) Stern.
