Caroline Frances Burrell, nee Thorp, was the first born to a Washington pioneer family on October 15, 1923. She was the granddaughter of Flora Splawn, who was the daughter of Charles Splawn, niece of A J Splawn, and granddaughter of F M Thorp, all early Washington pioneers. She passed away May 16, 2020, peacefully at a nursing home in Lynnwood, at the age of 96.
Caroline graduated from Zillah High School and attended Central Washington College of Education and Eastern Washington College of Education, where she majored in Home Economics and minored in Music. While in college she met and married Robert Burrell of Saskatchewan, Canada, and spent the first two years of her marriage working with her husband in Karluk, Alaska.
After returning to Washington, she and Robert obtained their teaching certificates and returned to Alaska as school teachers with the Alaska Native Service. After 5 years they again returned to Washington to teach for two years in Forks, and then moved to Enumclaw. Robert taught at Buckley High School, while Caroline taught at J J Smith Elementary School in Enumclaw until her retirement in 1993. She is fondly remembered by her many students for her creative and inviting style of teaching.
At home, she was frequently seen playing a violin, piano, guitar, or other musical instrument. She instilled a love for music in her family and was a member of the local community Orchestra. When not enjoying her music, she was always busy knitting, sewing, cooking, canning, and sharing her many creations with others.
She is preceded in death by her husband Robert, sister Claudia Adams, and half- sister Anita Dudley from her father’s second marriage.
She is survived by her sister Kathy Morris of Eugene Oregon, son Ken of California, son Keith of Washington, daughter Susan Sealy of Massachusetts, 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
She will be buried next to her husband at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent.
