Eugene "Ike" Daniel Weber

Ike smiled brightly at Jean as she handed him dessert.  The ice cream was straight from the deep freeze and he turned the bowl in his hands to adjust to the chill.  Slowly, with deliberate turns and flicks of his spoon, he scooped up a portion and brought it to his lips.  He loved ice cream like this.  He loved it because she did, because she had given it to him, and because where she was concerned he only knew how to love.  It’s one thing to fall in love, he knew.  It’s another to feel someone else fall in love with you, and to feel a responsibility toward that love.  So, he loved the ice cream, not for itself but for the love entrusted in it.  Ike, known to God and country as Eugene Daniel Weber, was born on February 23, 1924 to Christian and Emile Weber.  One of ten children, Ike was soft spoken and filled to the brim with a giving spirit.  His generous nature, calming presence, and indelible perseverance saw him through his time in the US Army, as a volunteer fireman, and fatherhood.  During WWII he served as a coxswain, guiding boats and soldiers to and from the battle’s shores.  Ike was very proud to serve, and eventually be injured, for his country.  For heroic and meritorious service in combat, for seeing all his men to shore, Ike was awarded two Bronze Stars.  Valor is common but great souls are rare.  Ike Weber had both.  When he returned home, he put ring to finger and became forever bound to the love of his life, Jean.  And with her he gathered up all his scattered dreams, like seeds for the planting, and trusted her to help them grow.  Together they raised beautiful children at home and beautiful flowers in their nursery.  Ike always had an easy smile, a helping hand, a warm greeting, and comforting embrace to give.  People were drawn to him, especially children, and in him they knew they could find safe harbor.  Though Ike was naturally comforting, Jean taught him that every bit of love was a seed to nourish and help grow in the blossoming garden of their life.  Strong, loving, and a father figure to anyone who needed it, Ike knew how to comfort, nurture, and support.  Whether he comforted and guided soldiers, uplifted the hearts of fellow amateur horticulturists, or encouraged children to take hold of everything the world had to offer, Ike was a pillar of strength and comfort for those who needed him.  On July 17, 2019, after 74 days without eating ice cream just to please her, Ike decided he could no longer tend to the garden of Jean’s memory.  Instead he went to help her tend the garden in Paradise.  Those whom comforted in order to make them comforters are his children Rick (Anne) Weber, Teri (Dan) Moffett, Pat (John) Roylance, Russ (Joan) Weber, and Brad (Debbie) Weber; his siblings Randal (Pat), Edward, and Tilly; his sister-in-law Virginia; and his wonderful grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
