Gladys Elaine Plowden

Gladys Elaine Plowden of Enumclaw died Oct. 3, 2018 at the age of 103.  She was born June 23, 1915 to Dr. Leland Stanford Wellington & Ida Bailey Wellington in Wynola, CA.  Gladys graduated from Julian High School in 1933.  She graduated from San Diego State College in 1936 with a degree in nursing.  Married June 24, 1936 in San Diego, CA to James E. Plowden.  She spent the next 32 years traveling across the county while he was in the Navy, including Long Beach, CA, Vallejo, CA, Enumclaw, WA, New Port, RI, Philadelphia, PA; Baltimore, MD, Norfolk, VA, Arlington, VA, & Tampa FL.  Gladys was an avid tennis player & golfer.  After 1963, she worked as a teacher at Christ the King Elementary School in Norfolk, VA & St. Elizabeth School for Special Needs & Education in Baltimore, MD.  She is preceded in death by her husband, CMDR James E. Plowden, Jr USN in 1998 and daughter in-law, Lucy Matricciani Plowden in 2009.  She is survived by her son, James Plowden of Enumclaw, sister, Irene Kitchin of Jamul, CA; 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.  A service will be held, Wed. Oct. 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Dulaney Valley Memorial Garden & Mausoleum in Timonium, MD.
