James "Jim" Allan Obituary

James (Jim) Robert Allan passed away at his home in Enumclaw, Washington in the afternoon on December 19, 2020. Jim was born on February 3, 1960 in National City, California. Jim had a good sense of humor and an ability to always remain calm and appreciate life. He portrayed those qualities even in the last few months of his life during his battle with cancer. The morning before his passing, he commented that he was rich for having three children who loved him. Jim loved and cared deeply for his family and friends.

Jim was raised in Chula Vista, California and graduated from Hilltop High School in 1978. He later enrolled in the welding programs at Lake Washington Technical College in 1989 and Renton Technical College in 1993. In his youth, Jim enjoyed surfing, skateboarding, and caring for his pets. Throughout his life, Jim also enjoyed fishing, visiting the beach, and watching the Seahawks, especially in the company of his family.

Jim met Kathryn (Kathy) Thom in 1982 in San Diego, California and they married in 1984 in Redmond, Washington. They primarily lived in Kent, Washington while raising their three children, Jessica Dian Allan, Ashley Nicole Allan, and Zachary James Allan.

Jim always had a talent for working with his hands and used his abilities to construct and fix many things throughout his life. This talent led him to become a proud and dedicated member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Union Local 104. He worked as a fitter and leadman at numerous shipyards for 27 years and retired in 2016. Jim was known for being a hard worker and received recognition and awards for outstanding performance and environmental awareness. Jim reflected fondly on his time as a fitter and leadman. He often shared humorous work stories and commented on the sense of comradery he felt working alongside his union brothers and sisters. Jim would not hesitate to work overtime to provide for his family and passed on the values of hard work and determination to his children.

Jim was preceded in death by his infant son, Bradley James Allan; ex-spouse, Kathryn Marie (Thom) Allan; and parents, Robert Francis Allan and Grace Jean (Gullacher) Allan. He is survived by his three children, Jessica (Allan) Babb, Ashley Allan, and Zachary Allan; son-in-law, Mark Babb; son-in-law, Steven Melin; sister, Sheri Morton, and brother-in-law, Jim Morton; nieces and nephew, Burgundy (Morton) King, Iain Morton, and Danielle (Morton) Hill; grandnephew and grandniece, Jackson and Kayla King; numerous cousins and other relatives; many dear friends; and his sweet little dog, Joey.

Jim will be laid to rest at Enumclaw Evergreen Memorial Park in Enumclaw, Washington on December 28, 2020. A virtual celebration of life and remembrance will follow.
