John McNab Obituary

John William McNab passed on May 9th, 2023, in his hometown of Enumclaw, WA. He was born to John and Elsie McNab on July 12th, 1939, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Growing up in nearby Dundas, he was a talented athlete who loved basketball and excelled in the sport, receiving a scholarship his first year at Ontario Agricultural College. Following the footsteps of his older sister Doreen, he immigrated down to the US and relocated to Salt Lake City, UT. It was there that he first learned about the Church of Jesus Christ, Latter Day Saints and met his future wife Martha, affectionately known to all as Marti. He enlisted in the California Army National Guard as a medic with the 17th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and went off to boot camp in August 1962. After completing basic medical corpsman training at Ft Sam Houston and airborne at Ft Benning, he returned to Salt Lake City. He later finished his initial reserve obligation at Ft Lewis, WA, and was always proud of his honorable service in the Army.

After boot camp he started his apprenticeship in the pipe fitters union. Shortly thereafter he proposed to his ‘best girl’ Marti and the two were married on November 2, 1963. John is survived by Marti and their five children, John, Heather, David, Michael, and Thomas. He also is survived by 14 wonderful grandchildren.

Aside from his love of basketball, he was passionate about hiking and camping in the great outdoors. There was no place on this earth that made him happier than being on Mt Rainier. John was an intelligent man, with a quick wit, and dry sense of humor that brought laughter to his children. Above all he was a loyal family man, who dedicated his life to his wife, children and grandchildren. A great void is left with his passing that will never be filled. He loved his family unconditionally and they love him still.
