Longtime Palmer resident Melvin Richard Beard died May 15, 2020 at his home. He was born April 20, 1929 in Fresno, California to Al and Ellen Beard. Mel joined the Merchant Marines before enlisting in the Air Force where he was a fighter jet mechanic. After discharge, his mechanical aptitude led him to a life-long career as a heavy equipment mechanic. Mel enjoyed camping with his family, fishing on the Green River, gardening and loved teasing and playing with his many grandkids. He was a devoted pet owner who loved his dogs and cats and enjoyed watching the wide variety of birds that came to his feeders.
His love, honesty, integrity and high character will always be remembered. Mel will be greatly missed by his family and those who knew him.
He is survived by his son Marty Beard of Auburn, WA; daughter Brenda Hunt of Palmer, WA; brother Edmund (Barbara) Beard of Buckeye, AZ; 19 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
