William David Cope
William (Bill) Cope was born in Puyallup, WA on November 21st, 1932, and passed away on May 8th, 2023, with his family by his side. He was a lifelong resident of Orting, WA where he graduated in 1950 and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences at Washington State University.
After graduation, he served in the United States Air Force as an active-duty fighter pilot who rose to the rank of Captain until retiring In 1962, he opened Copes Pharmacy in Orting where he served the community for 60 years. Cope’s Pharmacy was a large contributor and sponsor for both high school & local youth sports. Bill was also a loyal member of numerous clubs & organizations.
He rarely missed a Mariner’s game & traveled all over the country with his wife & other former alumni to watch his beloved Cougs play football. Horses were another passion, having had many of his thoroughbreds’ race at Emerald Downs. Bill & Shirley spent over 50 wonderful years together watching their children, then grandchildren, and even their great grandchildren in many different sports and activities. Bill lived his whole life in the city he loved and was an integral part of everything that is Orting. He lays to rest as a pillar of our community.
Bill is survived by his wife Shirley, his seven children, Tom, Gwen, Roxanne, Christy, Lanette, Boone, and Cheryl. He has seventeen grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Eleanor Cope, and brother Bob Cope. A viewing will be held at Weeks Funeral Home in Buckley on Friday May 19th from 9am to 12pm, followed by a graveside service at 1pm at the Orting Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at the Orting Eagles Hall on Saturday, May 27th, 2023, at 1pm.
